How old do you have to be to become a vet tech?

Most people are at least 18 years old because you need to have graduated from high school. You could probably get into vet tech school earlier like at 17 years of age, but you need to have graduated from high school early.

But also remember that you most likely need at least one year of pre-requisite classes. You might be able to take some of them your senior year at a local high school though.

Can I become a vet tech without taking classes?

Almost all state veterinary boards require you to have graduated from a licensed vet tech 2 year program in order to just sit for the exam.

You might thing you know a lot of stuff from working in a vet clinic for many years, but they also test on things related to biology, chemistry, etc. Not just placing catheters or taking x-rays.

How hard are 2 year vet tech programs?

Vet tech programs require you to do a lot of studying, it not just playing with animals. You have to learn about biology, anatomy, etc.

Sometimes working in a vet clinic can hurt your ability to do well in vet tech college because you learn a lot of bad habits.
