Tips For Finding Good Online Vet Tech Schools

Finding any online vet tech school is easy but in order to find a good one you have to be careful.  First of all you should be aware of the difference between an all online vet tech course and an AVMA accredited distance learning program.

If you are going to spend roughly $20,000 getting a vet tech degree you should get liscense.  Check with your state and see what the requirements are.

(a purely online vet tech course with no requirements for hands on training should be avoided)

Just because you graduated from vet tech program does not guarantee licensure.  Some online vet tech programs do not meet the minimum hands on requirements.

Of the over 100 accredited AVMA vet tech programs only 9 are approved for distance learning.

These nine tech programs are:

  • Blue Ridge Community College, Weyers Cave, VA
  • Cedar Valley College, Lancaster, TX
  • Jefferson State Community College, Birmingham, AL
  • Moraine Park Technical College, Fond du Lac, WI
  • Northern Virginia Community College, Sterling, VA
  • Penn Foster College, Scottsdale, AZ
  • Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN
  • St. Petersburg College, St. Petersburg, FL
  • San Juan College, Farmington, NM

As you can see these are the only schools that are AVMA approved to offer “online vet tech schools”.

The reason that these schools are allowed to provide distance learning is because they also require documented hands on time.  For example I believe that at the Purdue program you need to work 10 hours a week at a vet clinic if you are not full time at the school and you also have to some additional hands on work as well.

Bottom line:

It all comes down to what you want for your career.  If you want to have your degree mean something then find an AVMA accredited course.

Anything other than an AVMA accredited vet tech program means you could be wasting your money.
