Vet Tech Speciality #2 - Veterinary Technician Anesthetists

American Veterinary Medical Association recognizes several different vet tech specialties.  The second one I’ll cover in this series is the Academy of Veterinary Technician Anesthetists (AVTA).

This academy is a great way for vet tech to further their interests in the field of anesthesia.  To apply for this specialty, you have to complete an application and a skills form.  You also have to take a 200 question multiple choice exam that covers such things like anesthesia for neurology  pet patients, orthopedic pet patients, gi, renal, and hepatic pet patients, and most importantly anesthesia.

This was a meeting of the AVTA at the American College of Veterinary Surgeons this last weekend which has three days of continuing education related to surgical patients.

Application

To apply to the Academy of Veterinary Technician Anesthetists (AVTA) you have to submit an application of several parts.  Two important parts are that you need to have a case log of 50 that meet the AVTA definition of anesthesia care.

From those 50 cases you have to write up 4 of those into complete case reports.

A nice thing about this Academy is that you can gear your application either towards large animal or small animal.

AVTA Testing Sites and Dates

The next exam is in 2011 at 17th International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium September 14th to the 18th, 2011.

Reminder:

Its National Veterinary Technician Week!
