Vet Tech Specialty #1 - Emergency Critical Care Technicians

The American Veterinary Medical Association recognizes several different vet tech specialties.  The first one I’ll cover in this series i the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians (AVECCT)The AVECCT was the first organization to be recognized by the AVMA aas a vet tech specialty.  In order to be a part of this specialty you have to meet certain requriements and pass the AVECCT exam.

Here are some of their requriements:

1.  Must be graduate of AVMA approved vet tech school.

2.  3 years full time work in veterinary emergency field completed within 5 years of application.

3.  Must have at least 25 hours of continuing education related to veterianry emergency and critical care.

4.  Complete skills form, case log, complete four case reports, and two leters of recommendation from an AVECCT member.

There are numerous skills to master, and doing all of these does take time.  Some are simple like identifying abnormal heart sounds, where others are much harder to master, like doing chest drainage.  In order to do many of these skills you would have to work in a busy practice, because quite of few of these skills are not done in normal everyday veterinary practice.
