Vet Tech Specialty #3 - Veterinary Dental Technicians

The AVMA recognizes several vet tech specialties, and this week well cover #3 on our list, Veterinary Dental Technicians.  The professional organization is called the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians, and their goal is to give techs an opportunity to expand their knowledge in the profession by becoming specialized and accredited as a specialist in the field of veterinary dentistry.

This is a fairly new specialty, with the first group accepted into the Academy in 2006.  If you want to join you have to have your application packet in by December 31st.  To apply you need at least 6,000 hours working as a credentialed vet tech with 3000 of those hours spent on dentistry.

The whole process takes about 2 years, and you do not have to work for a dental specialist to qualify.  The exam is offered yearly in Baltimore Maryland at the Animal Dental Training Center.  The exam is made up of three parts.

So if you are thinking about pursuing this specialty, plan ahead, and contact the AVDT and ask if you can speak with someone who has gone through the process.
