Vet Tech Specialty #4 - Internal Medicine Vet Techs

The AVMA recognizes several vet tech specialties, and this week well cover #4 on our list, Internal Medicine Vet Techs.  The professional organization is called the Academy of Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians, and their goal is to promote interest and advanced skills for vet techs who wish to specialize in this area.

This Academy offers 5 sub-specialiaites, Small Animal Medicine, Large Animal Medicine, Cardiology, Oncology, and Neurology.

Requirements

In order to apply to take the exam you have to have at least three years with 6,000 hours of experience working as a vet tech in the field of internal medicine.  You must also complete continuing education hours, and complete the advanced skills requirements for the sub-specialty you want to do.

Case Log

You must also submit a case lost with at least 50 cases and a maximum of 75.  Four of these cases you must do a more in depth case report detailing the care that the patient received.

Other Vet Tech Requirements

You must take an exam and submit letters of recommendations.
