Vet Tech Specialty #5 - Veterinary Behavior Technicians

The AVMA recognizes several vet tech specialties, and this week well cover #5 on our list, Veterinary Behavior Technicians.  This professional organization is called the Academy of Veterinary Behavior Technicians, and their goal is to promote interest and advanced skills for vet techs with interests in animal behavior.

Their mission as stated on their website is:  “The Academy of Veterinary Behavior Technicians (AVBT) exists to promote excellence in the discipline of veterinary behavior medicine.  The AVBT will provide a process by which veterinary technicians may become certified as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in the field of behavior.  The veterinary technician who becomes certified as a VTS (Behavior) will demonstrate superior knowledge in scientifically – and humanely – based techniques of behavior health, problem prevention, training, management, and behavior modification.  The AVBT will advance the skills of veterinary technicians within the discipline of animal behavior and further their recognition as critical components of the veterinary behavior team in creating, maintaining, and strengthening the human-animal bond.”

In order to join you have to be a graduate of an AVMA approved vet tech program and a member of NAVTA and SVBT.  You also have to have a minimum of three years work experience in the field of animal behavior.  You also need to submit a case log and case reports along with letters of recommendation.

The next meeting is scheduled at the National AVSAB/ACVB Annual Behavior Conference.
