Vet Techs and Sticker Shock

Are surprised by how much your vet charges for things?  Many times it seems hard to recommend things to clients knowing how much the bill will be.  I can relate to a lot of pet owners because often times I don’t have the money to spend on my pet either.  So how can I recommend expensive procedures if I can’t afford them myself???

One thing you have to remember if you felt the way I felt is to remember that people are not necessarily in the same income bracket as you and many times people are more than willing to high prices to keep their pet healthy, even if it is not necessarily needed.

Remember that it is ultimately up to them to decide.  Your job as a vet tech is to recommend procedures your vet feels would benefit the pet.  What they cost is irrelevant to you.

Also remember, that the more income the clinic makes the more money there is available for raises.

Many times I have seen tech deliverable talk clients out of potentially beneficially procedures for their pets just because they felt that the price was too high or the procedure was unnecessary.

If you feel this way talk to your vet.  They should know what you are saying to the client, after all they are in charge of the overall health of the pet and the overall financial health of the veterinary clinic.

So the next time you have sticker shock over the price of a pet’s bill remember that running a vet clinic is not cheap and you are not running a charity.  You are a member of business that hopes to make a profit in return for services and products rendered.
