Vet Techs Expected to Know Everything?
Like many other type of graduates, veterinary technicians are sometimes nervous when they graduate because they feel like they do not know everything that they need to know to perform their job properly.
This is a common feeling among many veterinary technicians simply because there are so many things to know and skills to learn in such a short amount of time.
If you feel like this you have to remember that you’re not expected to know everything your first day on the job. In fact the veterinarians and veterinary technicians at your new clinic probably expect that you do not know or that you are not proficient in many skills yet.
Any good veterinary clinic will be patient with you and help you master the skills you need to perform your job properly.
Some skills like collecting blood samples or placing an intravenous catheter come simply by doing it many times. But on the other hand you should be expected to know some very basic restraint techniques of animals when you graduate from vet tech school.
While you are not expected to know everything you should know the basics like how to restrain an animal, how to do a fecal exam, and how to do it very basic examination of a patient.
Veterinary technician schools cannot teach you everything that you need to know in such a short amount of time, and even if they could it would be a waste of time for most students.
Most of things that you learned in school you quickly forget because in reality you really only use five to 10% of everything that you learned.

Unfortunately, due to cost cuts, they are often asked to do things well beyond their job description.
