Everyone is always asking what do veterinary technicians do? So to help answer that question, I have wrote down what I consider the most important tasks that we do every day.  Some may disagree, but these are the ones that choose.  Now vet techs do a lot more than this, but these are the main ones.

1. Obtain record patient histories: Vet techs are the first people pets see when they come into the exam room.  Vet techs often collect histories and do physical exams.

2. Collect specimens like blood and urine: Vet techs are very skilled in blood collection techniques because they do this almost every day.

3.  Give great nursing care: They have to give medications, change bandages, and monitor pet’s vital signs.

4.  Prepare operating rooms and equipment for surgery: Autoclaving of surgical instruments and laying out other surgical equipment.

5.  Prepare animals for surgery: Animals need to be medicated and prepped for surgery.

6.  Assist in diagnostic procedures like x-rays: Vet techs often help direct other personnel in how to take and develop x-rays.

7.  Assist in surgical procedures: For complicated surgical procedures, vet techs may scrub in to assist the veterinarian.

8.  Educate and advise owners: This is a big part of their job.  They often instruct pet owners on proper feeding and dental care.

9.  Supervise other clinic personnel like Veterinary assistants
